David A. Khan, MD, FAAAAI Lectureship

Dr. Khan has been a committed leader within the specialty. He served as President of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI) from 2022-2023 and Chair of the Program Directors Assembly from 2020-2022. He served as Chair of the AAAAI Foundation Council from 2023-2024. He was President of the Texas Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Society (TAAIS) from 2006-2008.

Dr. Khan attended the University of Illinois Medical school and graduated in 1988. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ in 1991. His allergy/immunology training was performed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN from 1991-1994. After completing his fellowship training, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1994. He is currently Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Khan has been a passionate educator for the specialty. He has been Program Director at UT Southwestern since 1998 and has trained over 60 fellows. He has been recognized at UT Southwestern for his accomplishments in education having received the Outstanding Teacher Award from various medical school classes 7 times. Dr. Khan remains active in the educational mission of the TAAIS and has been Course Director for their annual meeting since 2013. The TAAIS honored him for his educational commitment to the specialty with a named lectureship at their annual meeting since 2020. He has been Chair of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) Literature Review Committee since 2015 and was recognized in 2024 with the ACAAI Education Council Award.

Dr. Khan has also been a strong advocate for encouraging residents to join the specialty of allergy/immunology. He has been course director for the TAAIS Primary Care Resident’s Conference since 2007, a course designed to increase interest in the specialty. This experience led to the development of the AAAAI Regional Outreach on A/I for Residents (ROAR) program as one of his AAAAI presidential initiatives.

Dr. Khan has been an author or contributing author on more than 300 publications, abstracts and book chapters. His research interests have focused on drug allergy, refractory chronic urticaria, and asthma with comorbid mood disorders. He is a past recipient of the AAAAI Distinguished Clinician Award and the ACAAI Distinguished Fellow Award.
