William W. Busse, MD FAAAAI served as AAAAI President from 2000-2001 and is a Past Chair of the AAAAI Foundation Council.

Busse's career in Allergy/Immunology started at the University of Wisconsin Madison where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees. Following an internship at the University of Cincinnati and military service from 1968-1970, Dr. Busse completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Wisconsin. Since joining the faculty in 1974, Dr. Busse has remained at UW-Madison and was the chair of the Department of Medicine from 2004-2009.

During his time at UW-Madison, Busse's research interests have included mechanisms of asthma for which he has received funding for more than 30 years from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has also served on the advisory council of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Council, an expert panel on the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma and the NHLBI's Board of External Experts. He was an original member of the NIH-sponsored Asthma Guidelines group, for which he was chair of the Expert Panel Report 3. He is presently principal investigator of the NIH-National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Inner City Asthma Consortium, which focuses on immune-based therapy for asthma in inner-city children.

Judith and Bill met at UW-Madison during their undergraduate careers, where she completed her undergraduate degree in education and her MBA in accounting. Judith is a CPA and has worked in a number of Madison firms. Now retired, she volunteers as an accountant for a low-income tax program. The Busses have two children; Paula J. Busse, MD (New York) and Philip W. Busse, JD (Oregon).

The AAAAI Foundation and Dr. William W. and Judith H. Busse Lectureship is privately funded by the Busse family.
